RESPECT FOR WEAVERS, FAIR TRADE AND SUSTAINABILITY
Kirkit Rugs is an Istanbul based company that produces high quality knotted Carpets and rugs exported all over the world. We regularly attend international fairs such as Domotex, Hannover, Maison et Objet, Paris and The Rug Show, New York and Los Angeles. We are respected for producing some of the most innovative handmade designs to come out of Turkey today. We work with many designers around the world and are used to weaving custom designs with custom colors and custom sizes. We received a design award at Domotex 2020 with our hemp and goat hair “Full Moon” design.
Ahmet Diler, owner of Kirkit's Rugs, is deeply involved in environmental issues and fair trade business practices. Originating from Cappadocia in Central Anatolia, it is important for her to treat weavers with great respect, as she saw how exploited her mother and grandmother were as weavers. In April 2021, he opened a pilot workshop in Uşak with twenty-four weavers, the first of its kind in Turkey, where weavers are paid three times the average weavers' salary in Turkey, and access to pension funds and health care. . The production cost is higher and it is a big investment, but it is not important as we want to set an example for other manufacturers. We have to give back to the weavers what they have given us in Anatolia for thousands of years. We hope that it will become a standard for all manufacturers in order to stop the decline of weaving in Turkey.
Our latest modern collections are made from recycled materials, hemp (white) and goat hair (black) to create minimalist designs and rugs with a very different texture than is usually made. Hemp comes from ancient utilitarian plain weaves used in Anatolia for drying grain or fruit, and recycled nomadic black tents with goat hair no longer used. We collect these old textile products that we untie, wash and process and use them to knit new rugs. These are sustainable rugs and our customers appreciate this aspect of their production. In addition, we create new rugs with traditional patterns by recycling the yarns of old and worn rugs, and we also produce rugs with modern patterns.
We personally collect our traditional rugs and kilims from the most remote corners of Anatolia and carefully restore them by our own restorers.
